One-light design: switching, not dimming
Lunatone DALI-2 ROT PS push/rotary control → powered two-wire DALI line → Lunatone RM8 relay → ordinary LED fitting. The ROT PS combines a physical control, application-controller functions and bus power. The RM8 switches the light's mains supply; turning the knob cannot make an ordinary non-DALI driver dim through a relay.
Costed equipment
- Lunatone 86459822-PS DALI-2 ROT with 70 mA supply — USD 142.56 / AUD 206.61 at KNX Supply, USA. Select the With PS 70mA variant, not the cheaper bus-powered base, and not the similarly named D2 instance-only control. This particular model is the 230 V mains version in Lunatone's documentation, not a US 120 V substitute. Tax is not stated on the fetched US price page; allow applicable taxes separately.
- 86459822-Z04 white knob and cover — USD 14.40 / AUD 20.87 at the same supplier; tax not stated. The rotary base alone is not the complete finished wall control.
- Current Lunatone DALI-2 RM8 86456944 — EUR 92.67 / AUD 150.41 / USD 103.79, watt24 Germany, including VAT, listed immediately available. This price is for 86456944, not the legacy 86458675. It is a single switching output, bus-powered, with 8 A continuous-current rating subject to the exact load/inrush/protection specification. Use Lunatone D0130, dated 20 August 2026 for the exact installation-box model; ignore generic retailer copy suggesting every RM8 can switch 2 kW. No second DC supply is needed.
- SAL Wave S9065TCWH complete LED downlight — AUD 10.60 / USD 7.31, Australian retail including GST. Includes its ordinary LED driver, flex and plug; a compliant ceiling socket/connection and installation are still needed. This is not a DALI driver or a smart lamp.
- A suitable rotary-control backbox, relay enclosure/mounting, protected mains supply, safe lamp connection, terminals and DALI cable — local installer quote. Confirm mechanical fit of the European-format rotary base, local electrical approval and product availability before importing.
Verified application control, power and commissioning
The current RM8 manual and ROT manual establish the following specific path:
- 86459822-PS has both direct DALI command/application-control functions and an integrated 70 mA guaranteed bus supply. It is not merely an instance/event source awaiting an unlisted central controller. Its documented delivery mode is broadcast, On = DAP100%, Off = DAP0%.
- 86456944 RM8 uses 3.8 mA from that DALI line. Its factory table has “Ignore broadcast commands” disabled, an upward ON threshold at DAP2 and a downward OFF threshold at DAP1. Therefore the ROT's full-on and off levels cross the appropriate thresholds in the documented factory configuration. The relay applies switched mains to the ordinary SAL fitting. That is on/off, not dimming; rotary intermediate levels do not become variable lamp brightness through a relay.
- For this one-relay broadcast arrangement no control-gear short-address assignment is needed to receive broadcast commands. An installer must nevertheless verify the delivered configuration and safe power-up/failure behaviour; pre-used or reconfigured units are not assumed factory-fresh. Do not apply reset/identify procedures to live uncontrolled loads merely to check them.
- For individual or group control, a commissioning PC with Lunatone DALI Cockpit and a suitable DALI USB interface (or the commissioner's equivalent supported interface) is required. Address the RM8 as control gear, assign its group if needed, and configure the ROT's command destination for that short address/group. The ROT's own control-device identification is not the same as the relay's control-gear destination. Set and verify relay switching thresholds and power-up/failure settings before use.
Linear Matrix lists Lunatone in Australia. Confirm local approvals and suitable installation-box format through the local channel before relying on overseas offers. The required enclosure/backbox, protected mains feeds, terminals, driver/light, DALI cable and physical knob/cover are all part of the design; only the listed finished devices are priced here.
Wiring, difficulty and expansion
The relay and light need ordinary mains cabling, and the DALI devices need the dedicated two-wire bus. Do not use generic Ethernet rules or assume that a low bus voltage means it is safe to touch: the ROT manual explicitly says its DALI signal is not SELV. A licensed electrician must select insulation, segregation and mounting.
A basic broadcast loop has moderate commissioning complexity; individually addressed scenes add more skill. Bus power and the wall controller can be reused within their ratings. A second independently controlled light needs its own suitable gear and configuration; a second broadcast relay alone will follow the first. For genuine dimming, replace the relay/ordinary-driver approach with an approved DALI driver matched to the LED engine or a complete DALI luminaire, and recost it.
Literal wiring types for the cost plan
Control: two-core DALI bus cable with mains-appropriate insulation/segregation; load and ROT PS supply: mains-rated cable. DALI is not SELV; do not substitute ordinary data patch leads.
Price basis and safety
Prices were checked on 8 November 2026 (Australia/Sydney), not obtained as quotations. Currency equivalents use the RBA rates for 6 November 2026: AUD 1 = USD 0.6900 = EUR 0.6161. Converted figures are not US/Australian retail offers or landed import prices. Tax treatment is stated beside the source price; shipping, duties, extra tax on imports, wiring, labour and commissioning services are excluded. Site-specific enclosures, backboxes, connectors and circuit protection must be allowed for where listed, not treated as free. Australian fixed mains work requires a licensed electrician. These are researched examples, not hardware-tested installations.
