Building on the earlier introduction, this example deliberately uses Matter over Wi-Fi, so a Thread border router is not on the shopping list. It retains a physical wall switch instead of relying on an app to operate the room.

Choose a coherent control path
Physical switch → Shelly switch input → its internal relay → ordinary light. Separately, Home Assistant's Matter controller communicates over the existing Ethernet/Wi-Fi network with that relay. The physical input can operate the relay locally; it should not depend on a cloud automation or a Home Assistant automation being online.

Equipment budget
  • Shelly 1 Gen4, Australian supplier — AUD 27.99 / USD 19.31, SmartHome including GST. Buy the locally approved ANZ version, not an arbitrary international unit. This is one on/off relay channel, not a dimmer and not an energy meter. Its 16 A headline does not remove the need to check LED-load and inrush limits.
  • Clipsal C2031VA-WE complete one-gang switch — AUD 7.79 / USD 5.38, Australian retail including GST; grid, cover and ordinary latching switch mechanism included.
  • SAL Wave S9065TCWH complete LED downlight — AUD 10.60 / USD 7.31, Australian retail including GST. Includes its ordinary LED driver, flex and plug; a compliant ceiling socket/connection and installation are still needed. This is not a DALI driver or a smart lamp.
  • Home Assistant Green from homecurrent, Australia — AUD 349.00 / USD 240.81. The retailer's public product stock record reports in stock, purchasable and not on backorder when checked. The fetched price page does not explicitly state GST treatment, so confirm its tax invoice basis. Do not substitute the price of an optional radio accessory for the hub price.
  • An existing supported phone with the Home Assistant Companion app/Bluetooth for commissioning, plus an existing IPv6-capable home router with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a spare Ethernet connection for Green. This example reuses those assets; it is not a from-zero router/phone budget.
  • AVE PSU-12V1A Australian-plug supply from Wwave — AUD 19.00 / USD 13.11, including GST as Wwave's FAQ states. It supplies 12 V DC, 1 A, centre-positive, with a 5.5 × 2.1 mm barrel plug; these match Nabu Casa’s explicit Green replacement-supply requirements. The AVE manufacturer specifications independently confirm voltage, current, polarity and connector. This separately costed AU supply removes the missing AU plug from the international Green box; use it instead of the bundled international adapter. Green includes the Ethernet cable. Relay mounting space/enclosure, mains connections and protection remain required site items. The supply is publicly offered; dispatch/stock at the destination must be confirmed before ordering.
What do those prices add up to?
The switch, relay and complete light are AUD 46.38 / USD 32.00. With the in-stock Green offer and separately costed Australian supply, the five equipment lines add to AUD 414.38 / USD 285.92. This is a complete functional-device subtotal using the existing router and phone specified above, not a from-zero household network budget or an installed price. The Green price's GST basis is not explicit on the fetched page; the other local line prices include GST. Add the required site enclosure/protection/connection work by quote, plus any delivery charges.

If a working, compatible Matter controller already exists, it can be reused instead of buying Green. Conversely, leaving out the controller produces a locally switchable Wi-Fi relay installation, not the complete Matter example described here.

Installation and configuration
Use the Shelly 1 Gen4 manual and ANZ approval details. This example uses AC operation with neutral available at the relay. The ordinary switch connection is mains-referenced, not an interchangeable SELV bus input. An electrician must check the wall cavity, temperature, load and wiring arrangement; no-neutral switch locations can require a different installation design.

Install Home Assistant's Matter integration and Matter Server, select the Shelly's supported Matter mode/firmware and commission using its code. Configure the local switch-input mode appropriately. Home Assistant OS is free, and a Cloud subscription is not required for basic local Matter control. Initial Green setup needs internet; local operation does not mean every setup/update step works offline. Avoid guest-network/client isolation that prevents discovery or IPv6 communication.

Complexity and ongoing costs
Mains work is professional; networking and commissioning are moderate DIY/technical work. No new data cable is required to the relay, but Green needs Ethernet and the network needs reliable Wi-Fi. Green/router infrastructure is reusable across lights. Another identical relay/switch/light set has the same AUD 46.38 / USD 32.00 hardware allowance before installation, not another hub purchase. Remote access, voice services and a future Thread border router are separate optional choices.

Literal wiring types for the cost plan
Control/network: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi at the relay, Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet patch lead to Green; local switch and light: mains-rated wiring. No Thread cable/radio is required.

Price basis and safety
Prices were checked on 8 November 2026 (Australia/Sydney), not obtained as quotations. Currency equivalents use the RBA rates for 6 November 2026: AUD 1 = USD 0.6900 = EUR 0.6161. Converted figures are not US/Australian retail offers or landed import prices. Tax treatment is stated beside the source price; shipping, duties, extra tax on imports, wiring, labour and commissioning services are excluded. Site-specific enclosures, backboxes, connectors and circuit protection must be allowed for where listed, not treated as free. Australian fixed mains work requires a licensed electrician. These are researched examples, not hardware-tested installations.
