Following the earlier introduction, here is a small switching example rather than a whole-house shopping list. It shows why a C-Bus button on its own is not the cost of a working light.

The complete control path
5031NMML physical button → wired C-Bus → L5504RVF relay channel → ordinary mains-powered downlight. The relay contains a bus power supply; a separate automation server, Wi-Fi hub or internet connection is not required for this basic function.

Equipment to specify
  • Clipsal L5504RVF four-channel relay — AUD 957.84 / USD 660.91, Sparky Direct including GST. It switches four independent circuits; the headline rating is 10 A per channel, not permission to connect 10 A of any LED load. The exact load/inrush rating needs checking. Select the version including the C-Bus power supply, not a similarly named no-supply variant.
  • Clipsal 5031NMML master button mechanism — published manufacturer RRP AUD 184.00 / USD 126.96, including GST, not a discounted shop quotation. It is a C-Bus input, not a mains switch or an output relay.
  • A compatible 30-series mounting grid and cover. One costed way of obtaining these is the complete C2031VA-WE assembly below, with its ordinary mechanism removed and not used in this C-Bus example. Have the installer confirm the mechanism/plate combination and mounting depth before ordering. Clipsal C2031VA-WE complete one-gang switch — AUD 7.79 / USD 5.38, Australian retail including GST; grid, cover and ordinary latching switch mechanism included.
  • Clipsal 5500PCU USB PC interface at Nous House — displayed AUD 667.70 / USD 460.71. The fetched page does not state whether GST is included, so confirm that before using this as a final budget. This is a commissioning interface, not a mandatory always-on home-automation controller.
  • SAL Wave S9065TCWH complete LED downlight — AUD 10.60 / USD 7.31, Australian retail including GST. Includes its ordinary LED driver, flex and plug; a compliant ceiling socket/connection and installation are still needed. This is not a DALI driver or a smart lamp.
  • Installer-specified DIN enclosure, protection, mounting hardware, compliant lamp connection, C-Bus cable and patch/termination accessories — quote separately in AUD and USD equivalent. An existing switchboard cannot automatically be assumed to have space.
Budget
The five displayed equipment allowances above add to AUD 1,827.93 / USD 1,261.27. This combines one RRP and one supplier price with an unconfirmed GST basis: it is an equipment subtotal, not a complete installed or tax-final total. A Windows PC and USB connection are also required for the software commissioning route; this example explicitly reuses the commissioner's PC and tools. Their service charge is separate.

Wiring and commissioning
Use the approved pink C-Bus Category 5 cable and C-Bus connection rules. It is not an Ethernet network, even when a plug looks familiar. The light still needs normal mains wiring from the relay. See the C-Bus hardware installation handbook and model instructions for segregation, supply budget, network clock and burden requirements. The installer must enable/check the appropriate network clock and burden; buying arbitrary Ethernet terminators is not the answer.

Use C-Bus Toolkit and the 5500PCU drivers/instructions to assign the same lighting group to the button and selected relay channel, then save the project. Toolkit is a public download; this example does not require paid visualisation software. A trained installer may use the supported local learning procedure instead, but do not silently omit commissioning from a quote.

Complexity and expansion
Electrical installation is professional work; programming is moderate and C-Bus-specific. The supply, USB interface and unused relay channels are reusable infrastructure. Another lamp on a spare channel is not another complete starter system, but it still needs wiring, a control arrangement and load checks. A dimmer, touchscreen, app gateway or remote-access service is an optional different addition; this relay setup cannot dim.

Literal wiring types for the cost plan
Control: approved pink C-Bus Cat5 twisted-pair cable; load: ordinary mains-rated lighting cable; commissioning: USB plus approved C-Bus interface lead.

Price basis and safety
Prices were checked on 8 November 2026 (Australia/Sydney), not obtained as quotations. Currency equivalents use the RBA rates for 6 November 2026: AUD 1 = USD 0.6900 = EUR 0.6161. Converted figures are not US/Australian retail offers or landed import prices. Tax treatment is stated beside the source price; shipping, duties, extra tax on imports, wiring, labour and commissioning services are excluded. Site-specific enclosures, backboxes, connectors and circuit protection must be allowed for where listed, not treated as free. Australian fixed mains work requires a licensed electrician. These are researched examples, not hardware-tested installations.
