Match more than the radio band
A receiver must support the transmitter's radio variant and data profile. Same-frequency reception alone does not guarantee the application knows whether a telegram represents a rocker switch, temperature or occupancy. The EnOcean Equipment Profile, or EEP, supplies the application-level meaning for defined telegrams; Generic Profiles provide another documented approach.
The Alliance's Getting Started guide explains the radio/profile layers and system components. Use regional compliant hardware, the exact product's antenna/placement guidance and realistic on-site tests. Metal enclosures, wall construction and placement can affect operation. Do not promise a universal wireless range or assume repeaters are configured identically across products.
Learning and commissioning
Follow the receiver/gateway instructions for teach-in or its supported commissioning process. Record device identities, assigned channels, profile selection and intended actions. Use secure procedures and keys where supported; not every historical product provides the same security features. Avoid opening learn mode unnecessarily on a working installation.
Energy harvesting does not mean constant power is available for arbitrary traffic. Check the sensor's energy storage, illumination/actuation requirements and reporting behaviour. Design a stale-data timeout appropriate to the application rather than treating the last received state as permanently current.
Where the protocol documents fit
The Alliance technical library links Equipment Profiles, Generic Profiles, security documents, remote management/commissioning material and EnOcean-over-IP specifications. These are useful official protocol resources, with individual access/usage conditions; some items are explicitly member-only. Do not describe the entire ecosystem as an unrestricted public-domain specification.
A host-to-radio serial interface is another layer: it connects software to a radio module, rather than replacing the over-air profile. Likewise, an EnOcean-over-IP gateway can translate information for an application without making the original radio devices Wi-Fi devices.
Start by obtaining the transmitter manual, receiver compatibility list and the matching profile definition. Keep electrical output installation separate from wireless commissioning, with Australian mains work handled by an appropriately licensed electrician. For operationally important functions, use documented failure behaviour and suitable independent confirmation instead of relying on a single radio transmission.
